Cat Fostering in Singapore: 2026 HDB Pilot, Eligibility, Limits & Adoption Guide
5 September 2026

Guinea pig adoption in Singapore should begin with preparation, not an impulse decision. Guinea pigs are social, sensitive small mammals that need spacious housing, constant access to suitable hay, species-appropriate nutrition, enrichment, companionship planning, gentle handling, and veterinary care.
This guide explains what to ask and prepare before adopting.
Guinea pigs can be wonderful companions, but they are not low-maintenance starter animals. They produce significant bedding and hay mess, need daily feeding and observation, and may hide signs of illness until a problem becomes serious.
Guinea pigs are social animals, and compatible companionship can be important to their welfare. A bonded pair should not be separated simply to make adoption easier.
However, introductions require correct sex identification, health precautions, adequate space, and observation for compatibility. Do not place unfamiliar guinea pigs together without species-appropriate guidance.
Provide generous, continuous floor space that allows running, resting, feeding, and avoiding another guinea pig when needed. Many products marketed for guinea pigs are too small for suitable long-term housing.
Include multiple hides with more than one exit, abundant hay, water, safe bedding, feeding areas, and enrichment. Avoid wire flooring and unsafe heights.
Suitable hay should form a major part of daily care and remain available. Guinea pigs also need species-appropriate pellets and fresh vegetables selected with nutritional needs in mind, including vitamin C.
Ask about the existing diet and change foods gradually. Not every fruit, vegetable, plant, or human food is safe. Obtain veterinary guidance for an individual guinea pig’s age, health, and diet.
Protect the enclosure from direct sun, poor ventilation, excessive heat, rain, smoke, fumes, and strong drafts. Monitor the actual temperature and humidity around the enclosure; do not assume the whole room remains comfortable throughout the day.
Have a plan for warm periods, power interruptions, travel, and emergencies.
Guinea pigs may be frightened by hands approaching from above. Build trust through predictable feeding and calm interaction. When lifting is necessary, support the chest and hindquarters securely and keep the animal close to a safe surface.
Children need direct adult supervision. Never allow chasing, squeezing, dropping, or carrying without proper support.
Provide hay piles, tunnels, hides, chew-safe items, varied layouts, and opportunities to forage. Avoid exercise balls, wheels, harness walks, or equipment that forces unnatural movement.
Rotate enrichment without removing every familiar scent or shelter at once.
Before adoption, identify a clinic equipped to assess guinea pigs. Budget for consultation, diagnostics, dental care, medication, and urgent treatment.
Monitor appetite, water intake, droppings, weight, movement, breathing, eyes, skin, coat, and behaviour. Seek veterinary help promptly for reduced eating, fewer droppings, breathing difficulty, diarrhoea, bleeding, pain, weakness, swelling, dental concerns, or sudden change.
Discuss companionship needs and the individual history with a knowledgeable professional. Do not separate a bonded pair or attempt an unsafe introduction.
Adults must remain responsible for care, costs, handling, cleaning, and veterinary decisions. A guinea pig is not a child’s toy.
Routine bathing is not automatically necessary and can be stressful. Ask a veterinary professional about grooming for the individual animal.
